Characteristics of Physical Performance (3) Exercise performance has also been shown to be impaired in patients with GH deficiency and, in one study, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was found to be significantly reduced (mean seventy-two to eighty-two per cent of that predicted from age, sex, and height); power output was also reduced. Following GH replacement, maximal and submaximal exercise performance improved markedly. Moreover, VO2max increased to a mean of ninety-seven per cent of the predicted value, and maximal power output increased proportionally (Fig. 2.31). Submaximal exercise performance, measured as anaerobic threshold, also increased significantly, in keeping with the patients' observations that activities that were performed during daily life could be accomplished with less stress and would leave them less exhausted.
